Mental health nurses, also commonly known as registered mental health nurses (RMNs) or community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), are specialists in providing care and support for anyone suffering from mental health difficulties. They’re often trained in a range of support techniques, and are able to work directly with patients or carers in a range of settings, including healthcare facilities and the wider community.
Registered mental health nurses typically work in traditional healthcare settings, such as hospitals. They’re registered nurses that have specialist training in mental health conditions, and work as part of multi-disciplinary teams to provide support and therapeutic advice to hospital patients with mental health difficulties.
Community psychiatric nurses, on the other hand, are more often found working in local communities as part of a broader Community Mental Health Team. Their role involves providing similar support to RMNs but in less formal healthcare settings such as homes, GP surgeries, and community centres.
Both types of mental health nurse will have a broad knowledge base spanning a wide range of mental health conditions, which might include a specialism in a single condition, whether that’s depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anorexia, OCD, or something else.
They’ll also be trained in delivering diverse types of support, including carrying out assessments, monitoring medication, offering advice, and explaining anxiety or stress treatment techniques. They don’t always work directly with the affected individual though – sometimes mental health nurses will instead provide support and information to the people caring for someone with a mental health condition.
